Introduction to the Great Books
You have questions.
The Great Books have answers.
Begin the education that you've always wanted as you learn from some of the greatest minds in history.
The Introduction to the Great Books is an online series of classes that will expose you to some of the great thinkers of the Western World as you explore diverse subjects still relevant to today’s technological world:
What is government and why is it necessary?
Is there really good and evil?
What does it mean to be citizen?
What is truth?
The Great Books of the Western World will get you thinking about these topics in new ways, but at a relaxed pace that won’t tax your lifestyle and at a cost that won’t break the budget.
The overall program is broken up into 10 courses with 3 classes each, covering 4 weeks in length. Each course consists of enough reading, writing and discussion for you to make progress without being overwhelmed or bogged down. "As I was writing this, I felt like I was fighting off the temptation to travel down different rabbit trails of questions and thoughts... I grew very frustrated because I wanted to ponder and write about all these questions but then realized that it would take volumes and years to get to the bottom of it. And then it dawned on me... that's what the great books ARE! Volumes written over the years of humanity seeking answers to questions like the ones I have! And then I realized that the whole point of taking this class was to get me to start thinking about these things. Mission accomplished."
Elizabeth Shultz-Watertown, NY Take them in a series or as your schedule permits - there is no pressure normally associated with a traditional degree program like grades, credits or deadlines. Most students can keep up by dedicating one hour or more to reading each day. Academic work can be applied to one of our degree programs, just talk to your mentor.
Students have ranged from stay-at-home moms with young children to active duty armed forces personnel deployed overseas. If they can do it, so can you!
